Storage Mode

Electric Low Pressure compressors feed Electric High pressure compressors and store high pressure air in storage tanks

Discharge Mode

Air is released from the storage tanks and is heated in the recuperator to normal gas turbine compressor exit conditions

Extended Duration Discharge Mode

Air is released from the storage tanks and also generated by the Low Pressure compressors and is heated in the recuperator to normal gas turbine compressor exit conditions

Continuous Peaking Mode (Optional)

When the air tank is empty, the Turbophase gas powered compressors and electric low pressure compressors generate air to deliver continuous peaking power.

The FASTLIGHT Storage Engine has many modes of operation, providing the flexibility the Grid requires to provide stable energy to consumers. The Charging Mode allows for incremental charging of the air storage tanks and is configurable to storage duration requirements. The Discharge mode utilizes the Storage Engine to produce the energy on demand. A unique design attribute to the FASTLIGHT Storage Engine is the ability to run continuous when storage has run out by running the Low-Pressure Compressors to supply the full air flow to the Storage Engine, acting like a fast ramp Peaking Combustion Turbine.

Storage Mode

Charge with 1120MWh of solar energy (8 hours x 140MW) when the sun is shining

Discharge Mode

Discharge 1600MWh of energy (400MW for 4 hours) and consume 1096MWh of fuel energy (904MWh is recovered in recuperator) Effective Heat rate ~3800 BTU/kWh

Extended Duration Discharge Mode

Discharge 2400MWh of energy (300MW for 8 hours) and consume 2192MWh of fuel energy (1808MWh is recovered in recuperator) Effective heat rate ~5700 BTU/kWh

Continuous Peaking Mode (Optional)

Generate 300MW Continuously when the renewable source is not available at 7800 BTU/kWh Heat Rate
